Dedham Vale AONB

Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a timeless landscape of rolling meadows, ancient woodland, and gently winding rivers. Stretching across the Suffolk–Essex border, the area offers countless walking and cycling routes through scenery immortalised by John Constable. Visitors can enjoy peaceful footpaths, open skies, and unspoilt views that change beautifully with the seasons. Whether exploring for an hour or a full day, Dedham Vale offers space to slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience the countryside at its most inspiring.

Flatford Mill

Flatford Mill is one of the most iconic locations in Constable Country and a place of great artistic and historical significance. Now cared for by the National Trust, the mill sits beside the River Stour and is best known as the setting for Constable’s famous painting The Hay Wain. Visitors can explore riverside paths, watch boats glide along the water, and take in views that remain remarkably unchanged. With walking trails, exhibitions, and nearby tearooms, Flatford Mill offers a peaceful day out.

Stoke-by-Nayland Walks

The circular walks around Stoke-by-Nayland provide easy access to classic countryside directly from the village. River Stour Walks

Wagging tails are always welcome at The Crown. We offer dog-friendly rooms, our Muddy Paws overnight stay and a simple dog menu created with your four-legged companion in mind. With footpaths, open fields and riverside routes just outside, it’s an easy base for exploring Constable Country together.
