La Rioja Alta continues to be one of the benchmarks for traditionally produced Rioja. This estate is renowned for the quality of its Gran Reservas, 904 and 890, which are only produced in exceptional years. The superb 1994 vintage is just beginning to unfurl and, with aeration, it shows notes of wild strawberry, charcoal and cigar smoke. This is a complex and intense in an understated way, needs decanting and ideally two or three more years in the bottle.
