Art in Suffolk
Suffolk has a rich artistic tradition and there are many galleries and auction houses to visit. See our Diary Dates section for forthcoming sales.
The Munnings Collection at Castle House in the Dedham Vale is one of the crowning glories of East Anglia’s cultural heritage. It contains a dazzling collection of paintings by the East Anglian artist Sir Alfred Munnings, best known for his brilliant horse portraits. There is also the opportunity to see his Studio containing his palette and paints as well as studies and early works.
John Constable, born in Suffolk, is known principally for his landscape paintings of Dedham Vale, the area surrounding his home, now known as “Constable Country”. The site of his most famous painting, “The Hay Wain”, can be seen in nearby Flatford.
Norfolk artist James Hawke has painted some wonderful landscapes in oil exclusively for the hotel; these include some new renderings of scenes recognisable in some of Constable’s most famous works. All are for sale from Reception.
18th century landscape and portrait painter, Thomas Gainsborough, was born in Sudbury, Suffolk and Gainsborough’s House is now home to much of his work as well as other exhibitions through the year.
