The Crown Inn at Stoke-By-Nayland is situated within the Dedham Vale, a beautifully preserved Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Dedham Value and the Stour Valley extend across the lowlands of the Essex and Suffolk boarder which offer stunning views and great opportunities for country walks and for exploring the beautiful East Anglian countryside.
It comes as no surprise that the Dedham Vale area has historically been (and still remains today) a mecca for artists who seekto recreate the stunning landscapes in oil and watercolour. The combination of rolling farmland, meadows, rivers and ancient and unspoiled woodland has helped make this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) world famous. This outstanding natural beauty was most famously captured by local artists Constable and Gainsborough (pictured) whose works have been enjoyed by millions and can be seen in some of the country’s most prestigious galleries.
Thanks to its AONB status, the Dedham Vale and Stour Valley areas remain largely unspoiled since they were immortalised in paintings such as, the descriptively titled, Dedham Vale: Morning by John Constable in 1811. If you’re visiting the Crown Inn for pleasure, either alone or as a couple, then why not take time to enjoy all that this precious part of the English countryside has to offer.
Dedham vale is an area loved by walkers and being on foot is arguably the best way to enjoy all the area has to offer. There are a number of well-trodden routes from 2 to 61 miles making it perfect for a romantic stroll but also for those who enjoying hiking or activities such as orienteering. For those who prefer to explore on two wheels rather than two feet, the Stour Valley region rests on Nation Cycle Route 1 and is a favourite with both novice and competitive riders alike.
For those who prefer the water to the land, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the region by boat. Both organised trips and boat hire (for those who prefer to go it alone) are widely available in the area from places such as Dedham, Flatford, Sudbury and Bures.
Finally, when the sun goes down over the stunning local landscape you can return to the Crown for supper (and maybe a nightcap or one of our fabulous selection of ales) where our attentive yet non-intrusive staff will help make your stay as memorable as the stunning views.
